First Steps to 7+ introduces children to the early foundations needed for future 7+ preparation. Following our slow and steady approach, this programme helps pupils build confidence, curiosity and strong academic habits without unnecessary pressure.

This programme is designed for children starting Year 1 in September 2026. It is ideal for pupils moving from Reception into Year 1 who are ready to begin building the early English, maths, reasoning and problem-solving foundations needed for the 7+ pathway.
The course is carefully paced to help children feel confident, supported and ready to take on more structured learning without the pressure of last-minute preparation.

Early foundations for confident 7+ preparation
First Steps to 7+ introduces key academic and reasoning skills in a warm, structured and encouraging environment.
English & Verbal Reasoning
Reading comprehension, sentence structure, vocabulary expansion, phonics extension and introductory verbal reasoning puzzles.
Maths & Non-Verbal Reasoning
Place value, early operations, number confidence, spatial awareness, logic puzzles and visual problem-solving.
Confidence & Learning Habits
A gentle introduction to structured learning, independent thinking and group-based activities.

Time: After school, 3:45pm – 4:45pm
Important Booking Note: Our Monday and Thursday after-school classes run identical content each week. Please select only one of these days for your child's weekly attendance.
Our ten-week term-time course offers a highly structured yet encouraging start to your child's 7+ journey. Designed to seamlessly build strong academic foundations without the pressure, each weekly session alternates between two core disciplines to keep young minds engaged:
English & Verbal Reasoning: These sessions focus on reading comprehension, sentence structure, vocabulary expansion, and introductory verbal reasoning puzzles. We use engaging narratives and creative tasks to bridge the gap into early Year 1 expectations.
Maths & Non-Verbal Reasoning: These sessions are designed to stretch pupils by developing advanced number confidence, fluid place value, and spatial awareness. Through engaging logic puzzles, visual challenges, and problem-solving using the four operations, children learn how to organize their mathematical thinking.

Our engaging five-day workshop is meticulously designed to introduce rising Year 1 students to the foundational skills needed for the 7+ journey. Embracing our "slow and steady" philosophy, this course removes all pressure and focuses on building early confidence. The daily schedule includes two short breaks and one longer break halfway through the morning to ensure children stay energised and happy.
Each day is evenly split into two core academic blocks:
English & Verbal Reasoning: These supportive sessions introduce reading comprehension, creative writing, phonics and spelling extension and introductory verbal reasoning puzzles. Every lesson is crafted to smoothly transition children from the Reception curriculum into early Year 1 expectations with 7+ in mind, making learning both accessible and rewarding.
Maths & Non-Verbal Reasoning: These sessions stretch young minds by consolidating early place value, using the four operations and multi-step word problems.
